We’ve recently made improvements to how Origin identifies merchants and automatically categorizes transactions. As a result, you may notice that some of your transactions are now assigned to different categories than before.
What changed?
Previously, transactions from the same merchant could appear under slightly different names, which sometimes resulted in inconsistent categorization.
We’ve improved our merchant identification and categorization system to make transaction names and categories more consistent.
For example, purchases from the same retailer might previously have appeared under several different merchant names or spending categories. With these improvements, Origin can better recognize those purchases as coming from the same merchant and categorize them more consistently.
Why are my transactions showing up in different categories?
If you’ve been using Origin for a while, you may have adjusted your budgets around how certain merchants were previously categorized.
With our updated categorization system, some transactions may now appear in a different category than you’re used to.
For example, purchases from Target that previously appeared under Groceries might now appear under Shopping.
These changes are part of our efforts to improve categorization accuracy and consistency across Origin.
Can I change the category back?
Yes! You can still manually recategorize transactions to reflect how you’d prefer to track your spending.
To update a transaction’s category:
- Navigate to Spending > Transactions.
- Select the transaction you’d like to update.
- Tap or click the current category.
- Choose your preferred category and save your changes.
What if these changes have affected my budget?
If your budget was built around the previous categorization, you may notice that spending amounts have shifted between categories.
There are a few ways to adjust your budget:
Option 1: Update your budget using AI Advisor
- You can use Origin’s AI Advisor to help generate a suggested budget based on your spending.
Option 2: Reset your budget
- If you’d prefer to start fresh, you can reset your existing budget and go through the budget creation process again.
Option 3: Manually adjust your budget
- You can edit your existing budget to reflect your preferred spending categories and allocations.
- If you remove the budget allocation for a category, spending in that category will be included under Everything Else instead.
Will this continue happening?
Our goal is to make merchant identification and transaction categorization more accurate and consistent over time.
While you may notice some changes following this update, these improvements are designed to provide a more reliable view of your spending going forward.
We understand that changes to existing categories can be frustrating, particularly if you’ve spent time customizing your budget.
