If a transaction is showing as income when it should be an expense, or vice versa, you can update its transaction type directly in Origin.
Change the transaction type
- Go to Spending > Transactions.
- Select the transaction you want to edit.
- Select the Edit (pencil) icon.
- Under Type, choose Income, Expense, or Transfer.
- Select Save.
Origin automatically updates the transaction amount:
- Income displays as a positive amount in green.
- Expense displays as a negative amount.
- Transfer is treated as money moving between your own accounts.
Common reasons to change a transaction type
You may want to update the transaction type if:
- A refund is showing as an expense.
- A reimbursement is categorized as an expense.
- Money you received through Venmo or Zelle appears as an expense.
- Cash back or rewards are showing as an expense.
What happens after I change the type?
Changing the transaction type updates:
- The transaction amount and sign.
- Spending reports.
- Budget calculations.
- Cash flow summaries.
Your bank's transaction history is not changed. The update only applies within Origin.
