Origin automatically categorizes transactions to help keep your spending, income, and budget accurate.
Every transaction is assigned one of three primary types:
- Income — money you’ve earned or received
- Expense — money you’ve spent
- Transfer — money moved between your own accounts
Origin can also automatically identify matching transactions between your connected accounts. For ordinary transfers, such as moving money from checking to savings, both sides may be categorized as Transfer.
Mortgage payments are handled differently so that the payment can still be counted as an expense.
If a transaction isn’t categorized correctly, you can update it manually.
How to Re-Categorize a Transaction
- Select Transactions from the main navigation.
- Select the transaction you’d like to edit.
- Select Edit.
- Update the transaction type or category.
- Save your changes.
Your Spending, Budget, and reports will update to reflect the change.
Changing a Spending Category
You can also change the spending category assigned to a purchase.
For example, if an Apple purchase is automatically categorized as Shopping but you’d prefer it to appear under Phone, you can edit the transaction and select the category that best fits the purchase.
After re-categorizing a transaction, you may also have the option to create a Rule so similar transactions are categorized the same way going forward.
Automatically Matched Transfers
When Origin confidently identifies two transactions as the incoming and outgoing sides of the same ordinary transfer between your accounts, both will automatically be categorized as Transfer.
This commonly applies when you’re moving money between accounts you own, such as:
- Checking to savings
- Savings to checking
- Transfers between two bank accounts
Automatically matched transfers may appear in Review Transactions, where you can confirm the match.
If the match isn’t correct, select Revert. Origin will restore the transactions to the categories they had before the match.
How Mortgage Payments Are Categorized
Mortgage payments are an exception to ordinary transfer matching.
Origin categorizes the mortgage payment leaving your bank account as an Expense, even if your mortgage account is also connected.
If Origin can match the corresponding transaction on your mortgage account:
- The payment from your bank account stays categorized as an Expense.
- The mortgage-side transaction is categorized as a Transfer.
- The payment is included once in Spending, Budget, and cash flow.
- The mortgage-side transaction isn’t counted as income.
This helps accurately reflect the cost of your mortgage without double-counting the payment.
This behavior applies to new transactions and doesn’t automatically change your existing transaction history. Any Rules you’ve already created will continue to take priority.
Origin also won’t automatically override a transaction you’ve already edited.
🔔 Note: Transactions must be fully processed before they can be edited. Pending transactions can’t be re-categorized until they’ve posted.
