Some expenses only happen a few times a year — like annual insurance premiums, holiday travel, tuition payments, or home repairs. Origin’s budgeting tools can help you plan ahead for these larger expenses without disrupting your monthly budget.
Use rollover budgeting to build a sinking fund
For expenses that aren’t monthly, you can enable rollover on a budget category so unused funds carry forward over time.
For example:
- Your annual insurance premium is $1,200
- It’s due in 6 months
- You budget $200/month toward Insurance
- Any unused amount rolls forward each month until the bill is due
This allows you to gradually build up funds for larger future expenses instead of absorbing the full cost all at once.
Create non-monthly budget items
Origin also supports setting budget amounts for specific future months, which can help with planning for:
- Annual expenses
- Quarterly payments
- Seasonal spending
- One-time events like vacations or holidays
For example, if you know you’ll spend more on travel in July, you can increase that category’s budget specifically for July ahead of time.
At the moment, these future budget adjustments are not recurring automatically and would need to be set manually for each future month. Recurring non-monthly budgeting improvements are planned as a future enhancement.
Track specific events or trips with tags
You can also use tags to organize spending tied to a specific event or goal.
Examples:
- Holiday Travel
- Summer Vacation 2026
- Quarterly Taxes
Apply the tag to related transactions so you can easily see the total cost in one place.
Adjust future months only when needed
If you’re making a temporary budget adjustment, you can edit your budget and choose whether changes should apply to future months or only the current period.
