The fully executed estate planning documents securely stored in your Origin profile serve as the legally binding instructions for handling your affairs should you become incapacitated or pass away. At that point, named parties like your Executor, Trustee, or Attorney-in-Fact will need to access these documents to carry out your wishes.
To ensure a smooth process during an already difficult time, we recommend taking a few proactive steps:
- Share access to your Origin profile with your spouse/partner. They can view and download copies of your documents. This allows them to quickly locate the information when needed.
- Provide your Healthcare Proxy and Financial Power of Attorney with copies of the relevant documents granting them authority. They may need to furnish proof of their role to make decisions on your behalf.
- Keep a physical binder containing printed copies of all documents in a secure but accessible location, like a fireproof safe. Inform loved ones and your Executor of its whereabouts.
- Your Executor should maintain a complete copy of your documents in a secure place, ideally separate from your own residence for added protection.
- If you have a Trust, provide a copy of the Trust document to any named Trustees and your financial institutions for their records.
Remember to communicate clearly with all named parties about their roles and keep them apprised of any changes to your documents over time. Upon your passing, your Executor will use your Last Will during the probate process to carry out your final wishes.
